Job Overview

The Network Planning Engineer will be responsible for designing, optimizing, and expanding MTN Uganda’s radio access network (RAN) to ensure seamless coverage, capacity, and quality of service. The role involves detailed analysis of traffic patterns, site acquisition, RF planning, and collaboration with cross‑functional teams to implement network upgrades and new technologies such as 5G. This position plays a critical part in supporting MTN Uganda’s strategic objectives, enhancing customer experience, and maintaining competitive advantage in the fast‑evolving telecom market. Candidates will work closely with senior engineers, project managers, and external vendors to deliver projects on time and within budget.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive RF planning and optimization for existing and new sites.
  • Analyze traffic data and forecast demand to recommend network expansion strategies.
  • Coordinate site acquisition, permitting, and civil works with local authorities and vendors.
  • Develop detailed network design documentation, including schematics, parameters, and cost estimates.
  • Collaborate with the Radio Access Network (RAN) team to implement 4G/5G rollouts and upgrades.
  • Perform post‑deployment performance testing and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to field engineers during installation and commissioning.

Required Skills

  • Strong knowledge of RF engineering principles, propagation models, and network optimization tools.
  • Proficiency with planning software such as Atoll, Planet, or Mentum.
  • Experience with LTE and 5G technologies, including spectrum management.
  • Excellent analytical and problem‑solving abilities.
  • Effective communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Education

A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, or a related field is required. Advanced certifications in RF planning or network optimization (e.g., Cisco, Nokia, Ericsson) are highly desirable and will be considered an advantage during the selection process.

Experience

Applicants must have a minimum of five years of hands‑on experience in telecom network planning, preferably within a mobile operator environment. Demonstrated experience in managing large‑scale network projects, conducting site surveys, and delivering performance improvement initiatives is essential.
