Job Overview

The Network Optimization Engineer will be responsible for planning, designing, and optimizing MTN Uganda’s radio access network (RAN) to ensure optimal performance, coverage, and capacity. The role involves detailed analysis of network data, implementation of optimization strategies, and close collaboration with cross‑functional teams including RF, core network, and field operations. The successful candidate will play a critical part in enhancing user experience, reducing dropped calls, and supporting the rollout of new technologies. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive drive‑test and performance analysis to identify coverage gaps, capacity constraints, and quality of service issues.
  • Develop and implement RF optimization plans, including antenna tilt adjustments, parameter tuning, and handover optimization.
  • Collaborate with the core network team to ensure seamless integration of RAN enhancements with core services.
  • Utilize advanced analytics tools and AI‑driven platforms to predict traffic patterns and proactively address network bottlenecks.
  • Prepare detailed optimization reports, dashboards, and recommendations for senior management.
  • Support the planning and deployment of 5G trials and future network upgrades.
  • Coordinate with field engineers and vendors to execute optimization activities on site.
  • Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) such as RRC connection success, throughput, and latency to ensure targets are met.

Required Skills

  • Strong knowledge of LTE and 5G radio principles, RF planning, and network optimization techniques.
  • Proficiency with network analysis tools such as Atoll, Planet, TEMS, or similar.
  • Excellent data analysis and problem‑solving abilities, with a focus on actionable insights.
  • Effective communication skills for cross‑team collaboration and stakeholder reporting.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects, and meet tight deadlines.
  • Familiarity with Uganda’s regulatory environment and spectrum allocation is a plus.

Education

The candidate must hold a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related discipline. Advanced certifications in RF optimization, such as Nokia NetAct, Ericsson OSS, or Huawei iManager, are highly desirable.

Experience

A minimum of five years of hands‑on experience in network optimization within a major telecom operator or a reputable consultancy is required. Experience with large‑scale network deployments in emerging markets, especially in East Africa, will be considered an advantage.

Salary

MTN Uganda offers a competitive salary range of SSP 2,500,000 to SSP 4,000,000 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications. The compensation package includes performance‑based bonuses, health insurance, and a pension scheme.
