Job Overview

The Smart Grid Systems Engineer will be at the forefront of designing, implementing, and optimizing advanced grid technologies that enhance the stability, efficiency, and sustainability of Uganda’s electricity network. Key Responsibilities

• Design and engineer smart grid architectures, including advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), distribution automation, and demand‑response systems.
• Conduct feasibility studies, load flow analyses, and reliability assessments to support grid modernization projects.
• Integrate renewable energy sources such as solar and hydro into the grid while ensuring compliance with Ugandan grid codes.
• Collaborate with software teams to develop and test SCADA, IoT, and data analytics platforms for real‑time grid monitoring.
• Lead pilot projects in rural and peri‑urban areas, gathering performance data to refine system designs.
• Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and field technicians.
• Prepare detailed technical documentation, reports, and presentations for stakeholders, including utility partners and government agencies.
• Stay abreast of emerging smart grid standards, technologies, and regulatory changes to ensure continuous improvement.

Required Skills

• Strong knowledge of power system analysis, protection schemes, and grid automation protocols (e.g., IEC 61850, DNP3).
• Proficiency in simulation tools such as PSS®E, DigSILENT PowerFactory, or MATLAB/Simulink.
• Experience with IoT platforms, cloud services, and big data analytics for energy applications.
• Excellent problem‑solving abilities and a data‑driven mindset.
• Effective communication skills for interfacing with multidisciplinary teams and external partners.
• Project management experience, including budgeting, scheduling, and risk assessment.
• Ability to work on-site in remote locations and adapt to challenging field conditions.

Education

A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering, or a closely related discipline is required.
