Job Overview

The Satellite Communications Network Engineer will play a pivotal role in designing, deploying, and maintaining Ericsson’s satellite backhaul solutions that underpin rural connectivity and enterprise networks in Uganda. This position focuses on integrating satellite links with terrestrial infrastructure, ensuring high‑availability, low‑latency communication for critical services such as telemedicine, e‑learning, and financial inclusion. The engineer will collaborate with cross‑functional teams, including RF, core network, and project management, to deliver end‑to‑end solutions that meet stringent performance and regulatory standards. Key Responsibilities

• Design and engineer satellite backhaul architectures that integrate seamlessly with Ericsson’s Radio Access Network (RAN) and core network platforms.
• Conduct site surveys, feasibility studies, and RF planning for satellite earth stations and antenna installations across diverse Ugandan terrains.
• Configure, test, and commission satellite modems, routers, and associated network equipment, ensuring compliance with performance KPIs.
• Monitor network performance using OSS tools, troubleshoot anomalies, and implement corrective actions to maintain service level agreements (SLAs).
• Collaborate with local regulators, satellite service providers, and partner operators to secure spectrum licenses and ensure regulatory compliance.
• Develop detailed technical documentation, including design schematics, configuration guides, and operational procedures.
• Provide technical mentorship to junior engineers and support field technicians during installation and maintenance activities.
• Participate in project planning, budgeting, and risk assessment to deliver projects on time and within scope.
• Stay abreast of emerging satellite technologies, such as Low Earth Orbit (LEO) constellations, and evaluate their applicability to Uganda’s connectivity challenges.

Required Skills

• Strong knowledge of satellite communication principles, including link budgeting, modulation schemes, and antenna theory.
• Proficiency with network protocols (IP, MPLS, BGP, OSPF) and experience configuring Cisco, Juniper, or Ericsson routing platforms.
• Hands‑on experience with satellite equipment vendors such as Viasat, Hughes, or Inmarsat.
• Ability to use RF planning tools (e.g., Atoll, Planet) and network monitoring systems (e.g., NetAct, OSS).
• Excellent problem‑solving skills, with a methodical approach to diagnosing complex network issues.
• Effective communication skills for interacting with clients, regulators, and internal stakeholders.
• Project management capabilities, including familiarity with Agile or Waterfall methodologies.

Education

A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related discipline is required. Professional certifications such as Cisco CCNP, Juniper JNCIP, or Ericsson Certified Network Engineer are highly desirable.

Experience

Minimum of five (5) years of hands‑on experience in satellite communications network design, deployment, and operations. Prior experience working with telecom operators or infrastructure providers in emerging markets, particularly in Africa, will be considered an advantage.

Salary

The compensation package ranges from SSP 2,500,000 to SSP 3,500,000 per annum, commensurate with experience and qualifications. The package includes performance‑based bonuses, health insurance, and a pension scheme.
