Job Overview

The Fiber Optic Network Planner will play a pivotal role in designing, planning, and optimizing Airtel Uganda’s fiber optic infrastructure. Reporting to the Head of Network Engineering, the successful candidate will collaborate with cross‑functional teams to develop detailed network designs, conduct feasibility studies, and ensure alignment with regulatory standards. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop comprehensive fiber optic network designs covering core, metro, and access layers.
  • Perform route surveys, GIS mapping, and site assessments to determine optimal fiber paths.
  • Prepare detailed engineering drawings, bill of materials, and cost estimates.
  • Coordinate with civil, construction, and right‑of‑way teams to ensure seamless implementation.
  • Conduct capacity planning and performance modeling to meet current and future demand.
  • Ensure compliance with Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) regulations and international standards.
  • Collaborate with procurement to evaluate vendor proposals and select appropriate equipment.
  • Provide technical support during construction, testing, and commissioning phases.
  • Maintain up‑to‑date documentation and generate regular progress reports for senior management.

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in fiber optic design software such as OSP Designer, AutoCAD, or Bentley.
  • Strong understanding of optical transmission principles, DWDM, and GPON technologies.
  • Excellent analytical and problem‑solving abilities.
  • Effective communication skills for stakeholder engagement.
  • Project management experience with ability to manage multiple concurrent initiatives.
  • Familiarity with GIS tools and spatial analysis.

Education

A Bachelor’s degree in Telecommunications Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related discipline is required. Professional certifications such as Certified Fiber Optic Technician (CFOT) or Project Management Professional (PMP) are advantageous.

Experience

Minimum of five years’ experience in fiber optic network planning, design, or deployment within a telecom or broadband environment. Demonstrated track record of delivering large‑scale infrastructure projects is essential.

Salary

The position offers a competitive salary range of SSP 2,500,000 to SSP 3,500,000 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Performance‑based bonuses and allowances are also part of the compensation package.
