Job Overview

The Mine Safety Officer will be responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring comprehensive safety programs across all mining operations in Kasese. This role ensures compliance with Ugandan mining regulations, international safety standards such as ISO 45001, and internal policies. The officer will lead safety audits, risk assessments, incident investigations, and continuous improvement initiatives. By fostering a culture of safety, the Mine Safety Officer will protect personnel, equipment, and the environment, thereby supporting Kilembe’s reputation as a responsible mining leader. Key Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain the Mine Safety Management System (MSMS) in line with local regulations and ISO 45001.
• Conduct regular safety inspections, hazard identification, and risk assessments across all mine sites.
• Lead incident investigations, root‑cause analysis, and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
• Deliver safety training programs, toolbox talks, and emergency response drills for all staff and contractors.
• Collaborate with engineering, production, and environmental teams to integrate safety considerations into project planning.
• Prepare and submit safety performance reports to senior management and regulatory bodies.
• Monitor and enforce the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe work practices.
• Maintain up‑to‑date records of safety documentation, permits, and compliance certificates.
• Promote a proactive safety culture through continuous engagement and communication.

Required Skills

• In‑depth knowledge of Ugandan mining safety legislation and international best practices.
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities for risk assessment and incident analysis.
• Excellent communication and presentation skills to deliver training and influence stakeholders.
• Proficiency in safety management software and data reporting tools.
• Ability to work independently and lead cross‑functional safety initiatives.

Education

A Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Mining Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related discipline is required. Professional certifications such as NEBOSH, IOSH, or CSP are highly desirable and will be considered an advantage during the selection process.

Experience

Applicants must have a minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience in mine safety or a comparable industrial safety role. Experience in underground and open‑pit mining environments, conducting safety audits, and leading emergency response teams is essential. Prior exposure to international safety standards and experience working in Uganda or East Africa will be viewed favorably.

Salary

The successful candidate will receive a competitive annual salary ranging from SSP 2,500,000 to SSP 3,500,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Salary reviews are conducted annually based on performance and market benchmarks.
