Job Overview
The Network Security Engineer will play a pivotal role in safeguarding Safaricom Uganda’s network assets against evolving cyber threats. Reporting to the Head of IT Security, the incumbent will design, implement, and manage security controls across the core transport, access, and data networks. This position is essential for maintaining the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of critical communication services that support Uganda’s growing digital economy. Key Responsibilities
- Design, configure, and maintain firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention systems (IDS/IPS), and VPN solutions to protect network traffic.
- Conduct regular vulnerability assessments, penetration testing, and risk analysis on network components.
- Develop and enforce security policies, standards, and procedures in line with ISO 27001, NIST, and local regulatory frameworks.
- Monitor security alerts, analyze logs, and respond to incidents in coordination with the Security Operations Center (SOC).
- Collaborate with network engineers to integrate security controls into new infrastructure deployments and upgrades.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior security staff and cross‑functional teams.
- Prepare detailed security reports, metrics, and dashboards for senior management and auditors.
- Stay current with emerging threats, vulnerabilities, and industry best practices to continuously improve the security posture.
Required Skills
- Deep knowledge of network protocols (TCP/IP, BGP, OSPF, MPLS) and security architectures.
- Hands‑on experience with Cisco, Juniper, Palo Alto, Fortinet, or similar security platforms.
- Proficiency in security monitoring tools such as SIEM, NetFlow, and packet analyzers.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities with a proactive mindset.
- Excellent communication skills to convey complex security concepts to technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
- Relevant certifications (CISSP, CCNP Security, CEH, or equivalent) are highly desirable.
Education
A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Security, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline is required. Advanced degrees or specialized training in cybersecurity will be considered an advantage.
Experience
Minimum of five (5) years of proven experience in network security engineering, preferably within a large telecommunications environment. Experience with regulatory compliance, incident response, and security architecture design is essential.
