Job Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Legal Counsel to join our legal and compliance department. This role is critical in protecting the bank’s interests and ensuring that all business operations comply with the regulatory frameworks of Uganda. The successful candidate will provide expert legal advice, manage litigation, and oversee contract negotiations for various banking products and services. Key Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive legal advice to various business units regarding banking operations and regulatory compliance.
• Draft, review, and negotiate complex commercial contracts, including loan agreements, security documents, and service level agreements.
• Manage and oversee external legal counsel in litigation and arbitration matters to protect the bank’s interests.
• Monitor changes in local and international banking laws and advise management on potential impacts.
• Ensure all banking products and marketing materials comply with the relevant statutory requirements.
• Conduct legal due diligence for corporate clients and large-scale financing projects.

Required Skills

• Advanced legal research and drafting capabilities.
• In-depth knowledge of the Banking Act and other relevant Ugandan financial regulations.
• Strong negotiation skills with a focus on risk mitigation.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for stakeholder management.
• High level of professional integrity and attention to detail.

Education

Candidates must possess a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from a recognized university and a Post Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the Law Development Centre (LDC). Membership in the Uganda Law Society is highly preferred.

Experience

A minimum of 5 to 7 years of post-qualification experience in a legal role, preferably within the banking or financial services sector. Proven track record in handling complex commercial litigation and contract management is essential.

Salary

The monthly gross salary for this position ranges from 8,000,000 SSP to 12,000,000 SSP, depending on the candidate’s experience and qualifications.
