Job Overview
The Agricultural Extension Officer will be responsible for designing, implementing, and monitoring extension programs that empower smallholder farmers in the West Nile region. The incumbent will work closely with local farmer groups, government agencies, and private sector partners to deliver training on climate‑smart agriculture, livestock management, post‑harvest handling, and market linkage strategies. This role requires a blend of technical expertise, strong communication skills, and the ability to adapt solutions to diverse cultural and ecological contexts. The officer will also serve as a liaison between Heifer International Uganda and local stakeholders, ensuring that program objectives align with national agricultural policies and community needs. Key Responsibilities
- Develop and deliver farmer training modules on climate‑smart crops, integrated pest management, and livestock nutrition.
- Conduct field visits to assess farm practices, provide on‑site technical advice, and monitor adoption of recommended technologies.
- Collaborate with local government extension services to align program activities with national agricultural strategies.
- Facilitate the formation and strengthening of farmer groups, women’s cooperatives, and youth agribusiness clubs.
- Collect and analyze data on crop yields, livestock productivity, and household income to evaluate program impact.
- Prepare detailed reports, case studies, and success stories for internal and external stakeholders.
- Coordinate with Heifer’s supply chain team to ensure timely distribution of seeds, tools, and livestock.
- Identify and promote market opportunities for smallholder produce, linking farmers with buyers and agribusinesses.
Required Skills
- Strong knowledge of agronomy, animal husbandry, and sustainable farming practices.
- Excellent interpersonal and facilitation skills for diverse rural audiences.
- Proficiency in data collection tools, Microsoft Office, and basic GIS mapping.
- Ability to write clear technical reports and present findings to donors and partners.
- Fluency in English and at least one local language (e.g., Lugbara, Swahili).
- Problem‑solving mindset with adaptability to remote field conditions.
Education
A Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Agronomy, Animal Science, Rural Development, or a closely related discipline is required. Advanced certifications in extension services, climate‑smart agriculture, or project management are considered an asset.
Experience
Applicants must have a minimum of three to five years of hands‑on experience in agricultural extension, community development, or related fields, preferably within Uganda or the East African region. Experience working with NGOs, government agencies, or private agribusinesses will be highly valued.
Salary
