Job Overview

The Child Protection Program Officer will lead the design, implementation, and monitoring of child protection initiatives in the Mbarara region. Reporting to the Senior Child Protection Officer, the incumbent will collaborate with local authorities, NGOs, and community leaders to ensure that children are protected from abuse, exploitation, and neglect. The role involves conducting risk assessments, developing response protocols, and facilitating capacity‑building workshops for partners. Key Responsibilities

• Develop and implement child protection strategies that align with national policies and UNICEF guidelines.
• Conduct community‑based risk assessments to identify vulnerable children and high‑risk areas.
• Coordinate multi‑sectoral response mechanisms, including case management, legal support, and psychosocial services.
• Facilitate training sessions for government officials, NGOs, and community volunteers on child protection standards and best practices.
• Monitor and evaluate program performance using quantitative and qualitative indicators, preparing regular progress reports for donors and senior management.
• Maintain strong relationships with local child protection committees, schools, health facilities, and law enforcement agencies.
• Advocate for policy reforms and resource allocation to strengthen child protection frameworks at the district level.
• Ensure compliance with UNICEF’s safeguarding policies and ethical standards in all activities.

Required Skills

• Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities with a focus on evidence‑based interventions.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective stakeholder engagement.
• Proficiency in project management tools and data management software.
• Ability to work independently and lead multidisciplinary teams in challenging environments.
• Fluency in English and proficiency in a local language (e.g., Runyankole) is highly desirable.

Education

A Master’s degree in Social Work, Development Studies, Psychology, Human Rights, or a closely related field is required. Candidates with additional certifications in child protection, trauma-informed care, or humanitarian response will be given preference.

Experience

Applicants must have a minimum of five years of professional experience in child protection, program management, or related sectors. Experience working with international NGOs, UN agencies, or government ministries in Uganda or similar contexts is essential. Demonstrated success in designing and scaling protection programs is a strong asset.

Salary

The successful candidate will receive a competitive monthly salary ranging from SSP 2,500,000 to SSP 3,500,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience. Salary is paid in Ugandan Shillings and includes statutory benefits as per Ugandan labor law.
