Job Overview

The Sustainable Materials Engineer will join the Research & Development department to lead the design, testing, and implementation of eco‑friendly construction materials. Reporting to the Head of R&D, you will collaborate with cross‑functional teams, including production, quality assurance, and sustainability, to develop high‑performance, low‑carbon cementitious products that meet both local and international standards. Key Responsibilities

  • Lead research projects focused on developing low‑carbon cement blends and alternative binders.
  • Design and conduct laboratory experiments to evaluate material performance, durability, and environmental impact.
  • Collaborate with production engineers to scale laboratory innovations to commercial manufacturing.
  • Analyze market trends and regulatory requirements to ensure product compliance and competitiveness.
  • Prepare technical reports, scientific papers, and presentations for internal stakeholders and external partners.
  • Support the implementation of sustainable practices across the supply chain, including waste reduction and resource efficiency.
  • Mentor junior engineers and interns, fostering a culture of continuous learning and innovation.
  • Participate in industry forums and conferences to showcase LafargeHolcim Uganda’s advancements in sustainable construction.

Required Skills

  • Strong knowledge of cement chemistry, concrete technology, and alternative construction materials.
  • Proficiency in material testing equipment and analytical techniques (e.g., XRD, SEM, TGA).
  • Experience with life‑cycle assessment (LCA) and carbon accounting methodologies.
  • Excellent problem‑solving abilities and data‑driven decision‑making.
  • Effective communication skills for technical and non‑technical audiences.
  • Project management experience, including budgeting and timeline adherence.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Familiarity with Ugandan building codes and international standards (ISO, ASTM).

Education

A Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related discipline is required. A Master’s degree or higher in Sustainable Materials, Green Chemistry, or a related field is highly desirable and will be considered an advantage during the selection process.

Experience

Applicants must have a minimum of five years of hands‑on experience in materials engineering within the construction industry, with a proven track record of developing or optimizing sustainable building products. Experience in a multinational corporate environment is preferred.

Salary

The successful candidate will receive a competitive monthly salary ranging from SSP 2,500,000 to SSP 4,000,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience, along with performance‑based incentives.
