Job Overview

The Downhole Tools Engineer will be responsible for the design, testing, and field support of downhole equipment used in drilling and production operations. This role involves close collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, including drilling engineers, geoscientists, and field technicians, to ensure that tools meet performance specifications, safety standards, and client requirements. The engineer will also contribute to project proposals, technical documentation, and continuous improvement initiatives. Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop downhole tools such as drill bits, stabilizers, and measurement‑while‑drilling (MWD) sensors tailored to East African reservoir conditions.
  • Conduct laboratory and field testing to validate tool performance, durability, and compliance with industry standards.
  • Provide technical support during drilling campaigns, troubleshoot tool failures, and implement corrective actions on‑site.
  • Collaborate with clients and internal stakeholders to define tool specifications, project scopes, and delivery timelines.
  • Prepare detailed engineering reports, technical datasheets, and risk assessments for internal and external review.
  • Participate in continuous improvement programs, incorporating feedback from field operations to enhance tool designs.
  • Ensure all activities adhere to health, safety, and environmental (HSE) policies and local regulatory requirements.

Required Skills

  • Strong knowledge of downhole tool mechanics, materials science, and fluid dynamics.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD) and finite element analysis (FEA) tools.
  • Experience with field testing equipment and data acquisition systems.
  • Excellent problem‑solving abilities and capacity to work under pressure in remote locations.
  • Effective communication skills for interfacing with multidisciplinary teams and clients.
  • Commitment to safety culture and regulatory compliance.

Education

A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, or a closely related field is required. A Master’s degree or relevant certifications (e.g., API, ISO) are considered an advantage.

Experience

Minimum of five years of hands‑on experience in downhole tool design, testing, or field support within the oil and gas industry. Experience in East African projects is highly desirable.

Salary

The competitive salary range for this role is SSP 30,000,000 to SSP 45,000,000 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Performance‑based bonuses and allowances may also be offered.
