Job Overview

The Soil Scientist will lead and support research projects focused on soil fertility, nutrient management, and sustainable land use in the Mbale region. The role involves designing experiments, collecting and analyzing soil samples, interpreting data, and translating findings into actionable recommendations for farmers, policymakers, and development partners. The successful candidate will work closely with agronomists, plant breeders, and extension officers to integrate soil health insights into broader agricultural programs. Key Responsibilities

• Design and implement field and laboratory experiments to assess soil physical, chemical, and biological properties.
• Collect, process, and analyze soil samples using standard protocols and advanced analytical techniques.
• Develop and validate soil fertility models that support precision agriculture and sustainable nutrient management.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate soil data into crop breeding, agronomy, and climate adaptation projects.
• Prepare technical reports, scientific publications, and policy briefs that communicate research outcomes to diverse audiences.
• Provide training and mentorship to junior scientists, graduate students, and local extension staff.
• Engage with farmer groups, NGOs, and government agencies to disseminate best practices and promote adoption of soil health technologies.
• Monitor and evaluate the impact of soil management interventions on crop yields, farmer income, and environmental sustainability.
• Ensure compliance with safety, ethical, and data quality standards in all research activities.

Required Skills

• Proficiency in soil sampling, laboratory analysis, and data interpretation.
• Strong knowledge of nutrient cycling, soil amendment strategies, and climate‑smart agriculture.
• Experience with statistical software (e.g., R, SAS) and GIS tools for spatial analysis.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills for scientific and non‑technical audiences.
• Ability to work independently and as part of interdisciplinary teams.
• Project management experience, including budgeting and timeline adherence.
• Commitment to gender equity and inclusive research practices.

Education

A Master’s degree in Soil Science, Agronomy, Environmental Science, or a closely related discipline is required. A Ph.D. is preferred but not mandatory. Candidates should have a solid foundation in soil chemistry, physics, and biology, as well as familiarity with sustainable land management practices relevant to semi‑arid environments.

Experience

Applicants must have at least three to five years of hands‑on experience conducting soil research in agricultural settings, preferably within East Africa. Experience working with smallholder farmer communities, development agencies, or international research institutions will be considered an asset.

Salary

The position offers a competitive salary range of SSP 2,500,000 to SSP 4,000,000 per month, commensurate with qualifications and experience. Salary is reviewed annually based on performance and market benchmarks.
