Job Overview

The Data Center Operations Manager will lead the day‑to‑day management of Microsoft Uganda’s flagship data center located in Gulu. This role is responsible for ensuring optimal performance, reliability, and security of all infrastructure components, including servers, networking equipment, power and cooling systems, and storage solutions. The manager will work closely with engineering, security, and service delivery teams to implement best practices, drive operational excellence, and support the rapid scaling of cloud services. By overseeing capacity planning, incident response, and continuous improvement initiatives, the incumbent will play a pivotal role in delivering world‑class services to customers while upholding Microsoft’s high standards for uptime and sustainability. Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily operations of the Gulu data center, ensuring 99.9% availability and compliance with Microsoft service level agreements.
  • Lead a multidisciplinary team of technicians, engineers, and support staff, fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Develop and execute capacity planning strategies to accommodate growth in cloud workloads and emerging services.
  • Manage incident detection, escalation, and resolution processes, minimizing downtime and impact on customers.
  • Coordinate preventive maintenance, hardware upgrades, and energy‑efficiency initiatives in line with sustainability goals.
  • Ensure strict adherence to security policies, physical access controls, and regulatory requirements for data protection.
  • Collaborate with regional and global Microsoft teams to implement best practices, new technologies, and automation tools.

Required Skills

  • Deep knowledge of data center infrastructure, including power distribution, cooling, networking, and virtualization technologies.
  • Proficiency in monitoring tools, ticketing systems, and automation platforms such as PowerShell or Azure Automation.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities with a data‑driven decision‑making approach.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Experience with compliance frameworks such as ISO 27001, SOC 2, and local Ugandan data regulations.
  • Ability to work under pressure, prioritize tasks, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Education

A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline is required. Relevant certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate, Cisco CCNP, or ITIL Foundation are highly desirable and will be considered an advantage during the selection process.

Experience

Applicants must have a minimum of five years of hands‑on experience managing enterprise‑grade data center operations, preferably within a cloud service provider environment. Demonstrated success in leading technical teams, handling large‑scale incidents, and delivering infrastructure projects on time and within budget is essential.

Salary

The compensation package ranges from SSP 30,000,000 to SSP 45,000,000 per annum, commensurate with experience, qualifications, and performance. The package includes performance‑based bonuses and eligibility for stock‑based incentives in line with Microsoft’s global compensation framework.
