Job Overview

The Field Service Engineer will be responsible for delivering on‑site technical support, maintenance, and repair services for Caterpillar’s portfolio of heavy machinery, including excavators, bulldozers, wheel loaders, and diesel engines. This role involves traveling to client sites across Uganda, diagnosing equipment issues, performing corrective actions, and ensuring optimal performance and safety standards. The engineer will act as the primary technical liaison between customers and the company, providing expert advice, training, and documentation. Key Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on a wide range of Caterpillar equipment at customer locations.
  • Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical faults using diagnostic tools and technical manuals.
  • Provide on‑site training to customer operators and maintenance personnel on proper equipment operation and safety procedures.
  • Maintain accurate service records, parts usage logs, and generate detailed service reports for each job.
  • Collaborate with parts and logistics teams to ensure timely availability of spare parts and consumables.
  • Adhere to all safety regulations, company policies, and environmental standards while on site.
  • Identify opportunities for equipment upgrades, retrofits, and recommend solutions to improve efficiency.
  • Support sales teams by offering technical expertise during equipment demonstrations and tender processes.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and share feedback to enhance service processes.

Required Skills

  • Strong mechanical aptitude with hands‑on experience in heavy equipment maintenance.
  • Proficiency in reading schematics, hydraulic diagrams, and electrical wiring diagrams.
  • Excellent problem‑solving abilities and the capacity to work under pressure.
  • Effective communication skills for interacting with clients, colleagues, and management.
  • Ability to travel extensively across Uganda, including remote sites.
  • Familiarity with Caterpillar’s proprietary diagnostic software is an advantage.

Education

A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or a related technical discipline is required. Relevant certifications such as CAT Certified Technician (CCT) or equivalent are highly desirable and will be considered an asset during the selection process.

Experience

Applicants must have a minimum of five years of proven experience in field service engineering, preferably within the heavy machinery or construction equipment industry. Experience with Caterpillar equipment or similar OEM brands will be given priority.

Salary

The compensation package ranges from SSP 2,500,000 to SSP 4,000,000 annually, commensurate with experience, qualifications, and performance. The package includes performance‑based incentives, allowances for travel, and a comprehensive benefits suite.
