Job Overview

The Hydropower Project Development Manager will lead the end‑to‑end development of medium‑scale hydropower projects in the Apac region and beyond. Reporting to the Director of Project Development, the role involves feasibility studies, stakeholder engagement, financing negotiations, regulatory compliance, and overseeing construction phases to ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest environmental and social standards. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive site assessments, hydrological studies, and technical feasibility analyses for potential hydropower sites.
  • Develop detailed project proposals, including financial models, risk assessments, and environmental impact assessments.
  • Lead negotiations with financiers, donors, and private investors to secure project funding and ensure favorable terms.
  • Coordinate with the Ministry of Energy, National Environment Management Authority, and local councils to obtain all necessary permits and approvals.
  • Oversee the preparation of tender documents, contractor selection, and contract management throughout the construction phase.
  • Monitor project progress, manage budgets, and report performance metrics to senior management and stakeholders.
  • Implement community engagement strategies to ensure local support, address concerns, and promote social benefits.
  • Ensure compliance with national and international standards for environmental protection, safety, and corporate governance.
  • Mentor junior engineers and project staff, fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional growth.

Required Skills

  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities with a focus on renewable energy economics.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills for interfacing with diverse stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in project management software (e.g., MS Project, Primavera) and financial modeling tools.
  • In‑depth knowledge of Ugandan energy regulations, environmental legislation, and hydropower technology.
  • Leadership experience in multidisciplinary teams and ability to drive results under tight timelines.
  • Fluency in English; proficiency in Luganda or other local languages is an advantage.

Education

A Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Energy Management, Renewable Energy, or a closely related discipline is required. Professional certifications such as PMP, CEM, or equivalent are highly desirable.

Experience

Minimum of eight (8) years of progressive experience in renewable energy project development, with at least three (3) years dedicated to hydropower projects. Demonstrated success in securing project financing and managing large‑scale infrastructure projects in East Africa is essential.

Salary

The successful candidate will receive a competitive annual salary ranging from SSP 30,000,000 to SSP 45,000,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Performance‑based bonuses and allowances may be offered.
