Job Overview
The Smart Home Solutions Engineer will design, develop, and deploy integrated smart home platforms that leverage MTN’s robust network infrastructure. Working closely with product managers, software developers, and field technicians, the engineer will translate customer needs into scalable solutions that enhance comfort, security, and energy efficiency for households across Uganda. The role involves end‑to‑end responsibility, from concept and prototype testing to large‑scale rollout and post‑deployment support. Key Responsibilities
- Design and architect end‑to‑end smart home solutions that integrate IoT devices, cloud services, and MTN’s 4G/5G network.
- Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to define product specifications, user experience flows, and technical requirements.
- Develop proof‑of‑concept prototypes, conduct field trials in Jinja and surrounding regions, and iterate based on performance data.
- Lead the integration of third‑party devices and platforms, ensuring interoperability and compliance with local standards.
- Provide technical guidance to installation partners and field engineers during deployment phases.
- Monitor system performance, troubleshoot issues, and implement firmware or software updates remotely.
- Document design decisions, configuration guides, and maintenance procedures for internal and external stakeholders.
- Stay abreast of emerging IoT trends, security protocols, and regulatory changes affecting smart home deployments in Uganda.
Required Skills
- Strong knowledge of IoT communication protocols (MQTT, CoAP, Zigbee, Z‑Wave, BLE).
- Experience with embedded systems, microcontrollers (Arduino, ESP32) and sensor integration.
- Proficiency in cloud platforms (AWS IoT, Azure IoT Hub) and RESTful API development.
- Solid understanding of networking concepts, especially LTE/5G, VPN, and edge computing.
- Programming expertise in Python, C/C++, and JavaScript/Node‑JS.
- Ability to design secure architectures, including encryption, authentication, and OTA updates.
- Excellent problem‑solving skills and a hands‑on approach to testing and debugging.
- Strong communication skills for collaboration with product, marketing, and customer support teams.
Education
A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Telecommunications, or a closely related discipline is required. Advanced certifications in IoT, cloud services, or network security are considered a strong advantage.
Experience
Applicants should have 3‑5 years of professional experience designing and implementing IoT or smart home solutions, preferably within a telecommunications or technology company. Experience with large‑scale deployments in emerging markets is highly valued.
Salary
The compensation package ranges from SSP 2,500,000 to SSP 3,500,000 per annum, commensurate with experience and qualifications. The package includes performance‑based incentives and benefits aligned with MTN’s competitive remuneration framework.
