Job Overview

This role is part of WorldFish’s initiative to strengthen fisheries governance in Lake Edward and surrounding water bodies. The Sustainable Fisheries Management Specialist will lead community-based projects to improve fish stock sustainability, reduce overfishing, and enhance livelihoods through eco-friendly practices. The position requires collaboration with local stakeholders, government agencies, and international partners to implement science-based conservation strategies.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct field research to assess fish population health and ecosystem dynamics.
• Design and implement community training programs on sustainable fishing techniques.
• Develop and monitor fisheries management plans aligned with national and international sustainability standards.
• Collaborate with local authorities to enforce fishing regulations and combat illegal activities.
• Collect and analyze data to evaluate the impact of conservation interventions.
• Prepare reports and presentations for stakeholders, including funding partners and policymakers.

Required Skills

• Expertise in fisheries biology, ecology, or environmental management.
• Proven experience in designing and executing conservation projects.
• Strong analytical and data interpretation skills using GIS or statistical software.
• Excellent communication and community engagement abilities.
• Knowledge of Ugandan fisheries policies and regulations.
• Proficiency in both English and local languages (e.g., Runyankole).

Education

• Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Aquatic Biology, or related field.
• Master’s Degree preferred.

Experience

• 3-5 years of professional experience in fisheries management or environmental conservation.
• Experience working in rural Ugandan communities is an advantage.

Salary

3,500,000 – 5,000,000 SSP per annum, depending on qualifications and experience.
