Job Overview
The Vehicle Safety Compliance Engineer will lead the development, implementation, and verification of safety standards for all Toyota vehicles produced and sold in Uganda. This role involves close collaboration with design teams, suppliers, and regulatory bodies to ensure that every vehicle meets or exceeds local and international safety requirements. The engineer will conduct risk assessments, oversee crash testing programs, and manage documentation for compliance certifications. Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain vehicle safety standards in line with Ugandan National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) regulations and international norms such as UN ECE and ISO 26262.
- Lead crash simulation and physical testing programs, including full‑scale impact tests, component durability assessments, and occupant protection analyses.
- Collaborate with design engineers to integrate safety features (airbags, seatbelts, electronic stability control) early in the product development cycle.
- Prepare and submit safety compliance documentation for type approval, homologation, and periodic audits.
- Conduct root‑cause investigations on safety‑related field failures and implement corrective actions.
- Manage relationships with external testing laboratories, certification agencies, and suppliers to ensure timely delivery of safety‑critical components.
- Provide technical training and guidance to cross‑functional teams on safety best practices and regulatory updates.
- Monitor emerging safety technologies and recommend adoption strategies to keep Toyota Uganda at the forefront of automotive safety innovation.
Required Skills
- Deep knowledge of vehicle safety engineering principles, crashworthiness, and occupant protection systems.
- Proficiency with simulation tools such as LS‑Dyna, Abaqus, or HyperMesh.
- Experience conducting and interpreting physical crash test data.
- Strong understanding of Ugandan automotive regulations and international safety standards.
- Excellent analytical, problem‑solving, and documentation skills.
- Effective communication and stakeholder management abilities.
- Ability to work independently and lead multidisciplinary teams.
Education
A bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or a closely related field is required. Advanced degrees or certifications in vehicle safety, such as ISO 26262 Functional Safety Engineer, are highly desirable and will be considered an advantage during the selection process.
Experience
Candidates must possess a minimum of five years of hands‑on experience in automotive safety engineering, including involvement in crash testing, safety analysis, and regulatory compliance. Prior experience within a multinational automotive organization is preferred, as is familiarity with supplier quality management and cross‑functional project leadership.
Salary
The compensation package ranges from SSP 3,000,000 to SSP 5,000,000 per month, commensurate with experience, qualifications, and performance. The package includes performance‑based bonuses, health insurance, pension contributions, and other statutory benefits.
