Job Overview

The Field Service Engineer will be responsible for delivering top‑tier technical support, maintenance, and repair services for John Deere’s range of tractors, harvesters, and construction equipment deployed across Uganda. This role is pivotal in ensuring equipment uptime, customer satisfaction, and the overall reliability of our machinery fleet. The successful candidate will travel extensively throughout the Nakasongola district and surrounding regions, diagnosing issues, performing on‑site repairs, and providing training to end‑users. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on John Deere tractors, combine harvesters, and construction equipment.
  • Respond promptly to service calls, ensuring rapid resolution to minimise equipment downtime.
  • Interpret technical manuals, schematics, and electronic diagnostic tools to identify faults.
  • Provide on‑site training and technical guidance to customers and local dealers.
  • Maintain accurate service records, parts inventory, and documentation in compliance with company standards.
  • Collaborate with the parts department to order, receive, and manage spare parts efficiently.
  • Assist in field testing of new equipment models and provide feedback to product development teams.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations, environmental standards, and company policies during all service activities.

Required Skills

  • Strong mechanical aptitude with hands‑on experience in diesel engines, hydraulics, and electronic control systems.
  • Proficiency in using diagnostic software and handheld tools for equipment troubleshooting.
  • Excellent problem‑solving abilities and the capacity to work independently in remote locations.
  • Effective communication skills for interacting with customers, dealers, and internal teams.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and service manuals.
  • Strong organisational skills for managing service schedules and inventory.

Education

A Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or a related technical field is required. Relevant certifications such as John Deere Service Technician Certification, ISO 9001 training, or equivalent vocational qualifications will be considered an advantage.

Experience

Applicants must have a minimum of five (5) years of hands‑on experience servicing heavy machinery, agricultural equipment, or construction vehicles. Experience working in field service roles that involve travel across rural and semi‑urban areas of Uganda is essential.
