Job Overview

The Artificial Intelligence Ethics Specialist will lead IBM Uganda’s efforts to embed ethical principles into AI product development, deployment, and governance. Reporting to the Head of Ethics & Compliance, the specialist will work closely with data scientists, engineers, product managers, and external stakeholders to ensure that AI solutions are transparent, fair, and aligned with local regulations and cultural values. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement AI ethics guidelines, risk assessment frameworks, and compliance checklists tailored to the Ugandan regulatory environment.
  • Conduct ethical impact assessments for AI projects, identifying potential biases, privacy concerns, and societal implications.
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to integrate ethical considerations into the AI development lifecycle, from data collection to model deployment.
  • Provide training and workshops for engineers, product owners, and business leaders on responsible AI practices.
  • Monitor emerging AI regulations, standards, and best practices locally and internationally, ensuring IBM Uganda remains ahead of compliance requirements.
  • Engage with external partners, academic institutions, and civil society groups to foster dialogue on AI ethics and promote responsible innovation.
  • Prepare detailed reports and documentation for senior leadership, auditors, and regulatory bodies.
  • Support the creation of transparent AI documentation, model cards, and explainability tools for end‑users.

Required Skills

  • Strong understanding of AI/ML concepts, data governance, and algorithmic fairness.
  • Proficiency in ethical frameworks, such as IEEE Ethically Aligned Design, EU AI Act, and local data protection laws.
  • Excellent analytical, research, and problem‑solving abilities.
  • Effective communication skills to translate complex ethical concepts into actionable guidance for technical and non‑technical audiences.
  • Experience with stakeholder engagement, policy advocacy, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Ability to work independently and lead initiatives in a fast‑paced environment.

Education

A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Philosophy, Ethics, Law, or a related discipline is required. Advanced certifications or a master’s degree in AI Ethics, Data Ethics, or a comparable field are highly desirable.

Experience

Applicants should have 3‑5 years of professional experience in AI development, data science, compliance, or ethics consulting. Prior experience in a multinational technology firm or a regulatory agency will be considered an advantage.

Salary

The compensation package ranges from SSP 30,000,000 to SSP 45,000,000 per annum, commensurate with experience and qualifications. The package includes performance‑based bonuses, health insurance, and a retirement savings plan.
