Job Overview
The Data Privacy Officer will lead Absa Bank Uganda’s privacy program, ensuring that all personal data processing activities align with Uganda’s Data Protection and Privacy Act 2023, as well as international standards such as GDPR. Reporting to the Head of Risk & Compliance, the officer will develop policies, conduct impact assessments, and serve as the primary liaison with regulators and internal stakeholders. This role is pivotal for safeguarding customer trust, mitigating legal risk, and supporting the bank’s digital growth. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and maintain a comprehensive data privacy framework aligned with local and international regulations.
- Conduct Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs) for new projects, products, and services.
- Monitor and audit data processing activities across all business units to ensure compliance.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for the Uganda Data Protection Authority and other regulatory bodies.
- Provide privacy training and awareness programs for employees at all levels.
- Collaborate with IT, Legal, Risk, and Business teams to embed privacy by design into systems and processes.
- Manage data breach response, including investigation, notification, and remediation.
- Maintain up‑to‑date documentation, policies, and records of processing activities.
- Advise senior management on privacy risks and mitigation strategies.
- Stay current with emerging privacy trends, legislation, and best practices.
Required Skills
- In‑depth knowledge of Uganda’s Data Protection and Privacy Act, GDPR, and other relevant regulations.
- Strong analytical and risk assessment capabilities.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Proficiency in privacy‑by‑design principles and data mapping tools.
- Experience with incident response and breach management.
- Ability to translate complex legal requirements into practical business processes.
- Project management experience, preferably with certifications such as PMP or PRINCE2.
Education
A bachelor’s degree in Law, Information Security, Computer Science, or a related discipline is required. Advanced degrees or professional certifications such as CIPP/E, CIPM, ISO 27001 Lead Implementer, or equivalent are highly desirable and will be considered an advantage during the selection process.
Experience
Applicants must have a minimum of five (5) years of hands‑on experience in data privacy, information security governance, or regulatory compliance within the financial services sector. Experience working in a multinational banking environment and familiarity with cross‑border data transfers will be viewed favorably.
Salary
The compensation package ranges from SSP 30,000,000 to SSP 45,000,000 per annum, commensurate with experience, qualifications, and demonstrated expertise. The package includes performance‑based incentives, health insurance, and a retirement savings scheme.
