Job Overview

The Epidemiology Officer will lead the design, implementation, and analysis of disease surveillance systems across northern Uganda. Reporting to the Senior Epidemiology Manager, the officer will coordinate with district health offices, laboratories, and international partners to monitor disease trends, investigate outbreaks, and produce actionable reports. This role is central to WHO Uganda’s strategy of early detection and rapid response, ensuring that health authorities have timely, accurate data to guide interventions. The officer will also support capacity‑building initiatives, mentor junior staff, and represent WHO Uganda at national health forums. Key Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain robust epidemiological surveillance databases for communicable diseases.
• Conduct field investigations of outbreaks, including data collection, specimen handling, and case‑finding.
• Analyze surveillance data using statistical software (e.g., R, STATA) to identify trends, clusters, and risk factors.
• Prepare weekly, monthly, and annual epidemiological reports for the Ministry of Health and international donors.
• Provide technical guidance and training to district health teams on surveillance protocols and data quality assurance.
• Collaborate with laboratory networks to ensure timely specimen transport and result dissemination.
• Participate in multi‑sectoral emergency response meetings and contribute evidence‑based recommendations.
• Support research projects on disease burden, vaccine impact, and health system performance.

Required Skills

• Advanced analytical skills with proficiency in statistical software and GIS mapping tools.
• Strong written and verbal communication abilities for report writing and stakeholder engagement.
• Project management experience, including planning, budgeting, and monitoring.
• Ability to work independently and in multidisciplinary teams under tight deadlines.
• Knowledge of Uganda’s health information systems and disease reporting guidelines.
• Fluency in English; proficiency in local languages (e.g., Acholi) is an advantage.

Education

A Master’s degree in Epidemiology, Public Health, Biostatistics, or a closely related discipline is required. Candidates with a Ph.D. or additional certifications in disease surveillance are highly regarded.

Experience

Minimum of five years of professional experience in epidemiology, disease surveillance, or public health research, preferably within the African context. Experience with outbreak investigations, health data systems, and capacity‑building initiatives is essential.

Salary

The position offers a competitive salary ranging from SSP 2,500,000 to SSP 4,000,000 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Additional performance‑based incentives may be provided.
