Job Overview
The Grid Integration Engineer will play a pivotal role in designing, implementing, and optimizing the integration of renewable energy sources into Uganda’s national grid. Reporting to the Senior Power Systems Manager, you will work closely with cross‑functional teams, including project managers, grid operators, and external consultants, to ensure seamless connectivity of solar, wind, and hydro projects. This position offers a unique opportunity to influence national energy policy, enhance grid stability, and support Uganda’s ambitious renewable energy targets. The role involves both field work at generation sites and analytical tasks at the headquarters, providing a balanced blend of technical challenges and strategic impact.
As part of the Engineering department, you will be responsible for conducting grid impact studies, developing integration strategies, and overseeing the commissioning of power conversion equipment. You will also collaborate with regulatory bodies such as the Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA) to ensure compliance with national standards. Key Responsibilities
- Conduct detailed grid impact assessments for new renewable energy projects, including load flow, short‑circuit, and stability analyses.
- Develop integration plans that address voltage regulation, frequency control, and fault ride‑through requirements.
- Coordinate with project developers, EPC contractors, and utility engineers to ensure compliance with technical specifications.
- Lead the design and specification of power electronic interfaces such as inverters, converters, and FACTS devices.
- Oversee the testing, commissioning, and performance verification of grid‑connected renewable assets.
- Prepare technical reports, feasibility studies, and documentation for regulatory submissions.
- Provide technical support during operation and maintenance phases, troubleshooting grid‑related issues.
- Stay updated on international standards (IEC, IEEE) and emerging technologies in grid integration.
Required Skills
- Proficiency in power system simulation tools (e.g., PSS®E, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, ETAP).
- Strong understanding of renewable energy technologies, especially solar PV, wind turbines, and hydro turbines.
- Experience with grid codes, interconnection standards, and regulatory frameworks in Uganda or East Africa.
- Excellent analytical and problem‑solving abilities with attention to detail.
- Effective communication skills for stakeholder engagement and report writing.
- Project management capabilities, including scheduling, budgeting, and risk assessment.
- Ability to work independently and as part of multidisciplinary teams.
Education
A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or a closely related discipline is required. A Master’s degree or professional certifications (e.g., CEM, PMP) are highly desirable and will be considered an advantage during the selection process.
Experience
Minimum of five (5) years of hands‑on experience in power grid integration, preferably within the renewable energy sector. Prior experience working with Ugandan utilities or on projects in Sub‑Saharan Africa will be viewed favorably.
Salary
The successful candidate will receive a competitive monthly salary ranging from UGX 3,000,000 to UGX 5,000,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Additional performance‑based incentives may be offered.
