Job Overview
The Data Center Operations Manager will lead the day‑to‑day management of Microsoft Uganda’s primary data center located in Masaka. Reporting to the Regional Infrastructure Director, you will be responsible for ensuring optimal performance, reliability, and security of all critical systems supporting cloud services, enterprise applications, and customer workloads. This position plays a pivotal role in maintaining high availability, implementing best‑in‑class operational processes, and driving continuous improvement initiatives. Key Responsibilities
- Oversee the operation, monitoring, and maintenance of servers, storage, networking, and power infrastructure.
- Develop and enforce standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure compliance with industry standards such as ISO 27001 and Tier III data center requirements.
- Lead a multidisciplinary team of engineers, technicians, and support staff, fostering a culture of accountability and continuous learning.
- Coordinate capacity planning, forecasting, and scaling activities to meet growing demand for cloud services.
- Manage incident response, root‑cause analysis, and post‑mortem reporting to minimize downtime.
- Ensure strict adherence to security policies, physical access controls, and environmental monitoring.
- Collaborate with Microsoft global support teams to implement patches, upgrades, and new technology rollouts.
- Prepare and present operational performance metrics and KPI dashboards to senior leadership.
- Drive sustainability initiatives, optimizing energy consumption and exploring renewable energy integration.
- Maintain comprehensive documentation of configurations, change management, and compliance audits.
Required Skills
- Deep expertise in data center infrastructure, including servers, SAN/NAS storage, networking (Cisco, Juniper), and power systems.
- Proficiency with monitoring tools such as System Center Operations Manager, SolarWinds, or equivalent.
- Strong knowledge of virtualization platforms (Hyper‑V, VMware) and cloud technologies (Azure Stack, Azure IaaS).
- Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management abilities.
- Analytical mindset with a focus on data‑driven decision making.
- Experience implementing ITIL/ITSM frameworks and managing change control processes.
- Ability to work under pressure, prioritize multiple tasks, and meet strict SLAs.
- Commitment to safety, security, and environmental best practices.
Education
A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline is required. Professional certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate, Cisco CCNP, or ITIL Foundation are highly desirable.
Experience
Minimum of eight (8) years of progressive experience in data center operations, with at least three (3) years in a supervisory or managerial capacity. Proven track record of managing large‑scale infrastructure projects and delivering measurable improvements in uptime and efficiency.
Salary
The compensation package ranges from SSP 25,000,000 to SSP 35,000,000 annually, commensurate with experience and qualifications. The package includes performance‑based bonuses and comprehensive benefits.
