Job Overview

As a Digital Archivist, you will lead efforts to digitize and curate cultural heritage materials in Masaka, Uganda. This role combines technical expertise in digital preservation with a passion for safeguarding intangible heritage. The position is ideal for professionals seeking to bridge technology and cultural stewardship in a rapidly evolving global landscape.

Key Responsibilities

  • Digitize and catalog historical documents, photographs, and artifacts using industry-standard software.
  • Develop metadata schemas and implement digital asset management systems for cultural collections.
  • Collaborate with local communities to document oral histories and traditional knowledge.
  • Ensure compliance with international digital preservation standards (e.g., ISO 14721).
  • Train local staff in digital archiving techniques and software tools.

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in digital archiving software (Adobe Creative Suite, Archivists’ Toolkit).
  • Experience with metadata standards (Dublin Core, METS/ PREMIS).
  • Strong understanding of cultural heritage preservation principles.
  • Fluency in both English and Luganda.
  • Excellent project management and cross-cultural communication skills.

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Digital Archiving, Cultural Heritage, Library Science, or related field.
  • Master’s Degree preferred but not required.

Experience

  • 3-5 years of experience in digital archiving or cultural heritage documentation.
  • Previous work in Sub-Saharan Africa is a strong advantage.

Salary

1,500,000 – 2,500,000 SSP/month, commensurate with experience.
