Job Overview

The Insurance Underwriting Manager will lead the underwriting team in Gulu, overseeing the evaluation, pricing, and approval of insurance policies across life, health, and general insurance lines. This role is pivotal in ensuring that underwriting practices align with AIA Uganda’s risk appetite, regulatory standards, and profitability targets. Key Responsibilities

• Lead and manage a team of underwriters, setting performance targets and providing coaching.
• Develop, review, and implement underwriting policies and procedures that comply with local regulations and AIA Group standards.
• Assess complex risk proposals, determine appropriate pricing, and approve or decline applications based on risk appetite.
• Collaborate with sales and marketing teams to design competitive insurance products tailored to the Gulu market.
• Monitor underwriting performance metrics, profitability, loss ratios, and recommend corrective actions.
• Conduct regular training sessions for underwriters on emerging risks, underwriting techniques, and regulatory updates.
• Maintain strong relationships with brokers, corporate clients, and regulatory authorities.
• Prepare detailed underwriting reports for senior management and the board.

Required Skills

• Strong analytical and quantitative abilities to evaluate risk and pricing models.
• In‑depth knowledge of Ugandan insurance regulations and industry best practices.
• Excellent leadership and team‑building skills.
• Effective communication and negotiation skills with internal and external stakeholders.
• Proficiency in underwriting software and Microsoft Office Suite.
• Strategic thinking with a focus on profitability and risk mitigation.

Education

The ideal candidate must hold a Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business Administration, Economics, Actuarial Science, or a related discipline. Professional certifications such as Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) qualifications or equivalent are highly desirable and will be considered an advantage during the selection process.

Experience

A minimum of five years of progressive experience in insurance underwriting, with at least two years in a supervisory or managerial capacity, is required. Experience in life and health insurance lines, as well as exposure to the Ugandan market, will be particularly valuable.

Salary

The compensation package ranges from SSP 30,000,000 to SSP 45,000,000 per annum, commensurate with experience and qualifications. The package includes performance‑based bonuses, health insurance, pension contributions, and other statutory benefits.
