Job Overview

The Port Operations Manager will lead all operational activities at the Port Bell terminal, ensuring seamless cargo handling, vessel turnaround, and compliance with international maritime standards. Reporting to the Regional Operations Director, the incumbent will coordinate with stevedoring teams, customs authorities, shipping lines and logistics partners to optimize throughput and maintain high service levels. Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily terminal operations, including vessel berthing, cargo loading/unloading, and yard management.
  • Develop and implement operational plans that meet performance targets for productivity, safety and customer satisfaction.
  • Coordinate with customs, immigration and regulatory agencies to ensure compliance with all local and international regulations.
  • Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) and generate reports for senior management.
  • Lead a multidisciplinary team of supervisors, technicians and support staff, fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Manage budgetary responsibilities, including cost control, resource allocation and procurement of equipment.
  • Implement and maintain security protocols in line with the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code.
  • Drive the adoption of digital tools such as terminal operating systems (TOS) and automated gate systems.
  • Ensure emergency response plans are up‑to‑date and conduct regular drills.
  • Represent DP World Uganda in stakeholder meetings, industry forums and community outreach programs.

Required Skills

  • Strong leadership and people‑management abilities.
  • In‑depth knowledge of maritime regulations, port operations and supply‑chain logistics.
  • Proficiency with terminal operating systems and data analytics tools.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills.
  • Problem‑solving mindset with a focus on operational efficiency.
  • Ability to work under pressure and make decisive decisions.
  • Fluency in English; knowledge of Swahili or local languages is an advantage.

Education

A Bachelor’s degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Maritime Studies, Engineering or a related discipline is required. Professional certifications such as Certified Port Professional (CPP) or equivalent are highly desirable.

Experience

Minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience in port operations, terminal management or maritime logistics, with at least two (2) years in a supervisory or managerial role. Experience in a multinational environment and exposure to modern digital port solutions will be considered an asset.

Salary

The successful candidate will receive a competitive salary ranging from 5,000,000 to 8,000,000 SSP per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Performance‑based bonuses and allowances are also part of the remuneration package.
