Job Overview
The Smart City Solutions Architect will lead the design, development, and implementation of integrated smart city platforms for municipalities and private partners in Uganda. This role combines expertise in IoT, data analytics, cloud computing, and urban planning to create resilient, connected, and citizen‑centric urban environments. The architect will work closely with cross‑functional teams, including engineers, data scientists, policy makers, and community stakeholders, to translate strategic objectives into scalable technical solutions. This position offers a unique opportunity to shape the future of Ugandan cities, contribute to national digital agendas, and advance Microsoft’s vision of a smarter, more sustainable world.
Key Responsibilities
- Design end‑to‑end smart city architectures that integrate IoT sensors, edge computing, cloud services, and AI analytics.
- Collaborate with municipal authorities and private sector partners to define project scope, requirements, and success metrics.
- Develop technical roadmaps, solution blueprints, and implementation plans aligned with Microsoft Azure and other Microsoft platforms.
- Lead proof‑of‑concept pilots for smart lighting, traffic management, waste collection, and public safety solutions.
- Ensure compliance with local regulations, data privacy standards, and sustainability guidelines.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to development and engineering teams throughout the project lifecycle.
- Conduct risk assessments, performance testing, and continuous optimization of deployed solutions.
- Prepare detailed documentation, technical reports, and presentations for stakeholders and senior leadership.
- Stay abreast of emerging smart city trends, standards, and best practices to drive innovation.
Required Skills
- Strong expertise in IoT platforms, sensor networks, and edge computing.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Azure services (IoT Hub, Azure Functions, Stream Analytics, Digital Twins).
- Experience in designing large‑scale, cloud‑native architectures.
- Solid understanding of urban planning concepts, GIS, and public infrastructure systems.
- Programming skills in Python, JavaScript, or C# for integration and analytics.
- Excellent problem‑solving abilities and strategic thinking.
- Effective communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to work in multidisciplinary teams and lead technical workshops.
Education
A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Urban Planning, Civil Engineering, or a related discipline is required. Advanced certifications in Microsoft Azure Architecture, IoT, or Smart City solutions are highly desirable.
Experience
Minimum of five (5) years of experience designing and delivering IoT or smart city projects, preferably within the African market. Demonstrated success in leading cross‑functional teams and managing complex, multi‑stakeholder initiatives is essential.
Salary
The competitive salary range for this role is SSP 3,500,000 to SSP 5,000,000 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Additional performance‑based incentives may be offered.
