Job Overview

The Marine Environmental Compliance Officer will lead Glencore’s efforts to monitor, assess, and enforce environmental regulations related to marine and freshwater operations. This role is pivotal in safeguarding biodiversity, ensuring compliance with Ugandan environmental laws, and supporting the company’s sustainability objectives. Key Responsibilities

• Develop, implement, and maintain marine environmental compliance programs aligned with Ugandan legislation and international best practices.
• Conduct regular site inspections, water quality testing, and biodiversity assessments for Glencore’s marine and freshwater projects.
• Prepare detailed compliance reports, risk assessments, and corrective action plans for senior management.
• Liaise with the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), Ministry of Water and Environment, and local NGOs to ensure transparent communication and timely issue resolution.
• Lead internal audits and support external regulatory audits, providing necessary documentation and evidence of compliance.
• Train and mentor cross‑functional teams on environmental policies, emergency response procedures, and sustainable operational practices.
• Monitor emerging regulations and industry standards, recommending policy updates to maintain proactive compliance.
• Facilitate community outreach programs that promote marine conservation awareness and stakeholder participation.

Required Skills

• Strong knowledge of Ugandan marine and freshwater environmental regulations, including the Water Act and NEMA guidelines.
• Proficiency in environmental monitoring tools, GIS mapping, and data analysis software.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills for report preparation and stakeholder engagement.
• Ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
• Critical thinking and problem‑solving capabilities to address complex compliance challenges.
• Experience with ISO 14001 environmental management systems is highly desirable.

Education

A Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Marine Biology, Ecology, or a closely related field is required. Advanced certifications such as Certified Environmental Professional (CEP) or a Master’s degree will be considered an advantage.

Experience

Applicants must have a minimum of five years of hands‑on experience in marine environmental compliance, environmental impact assessments, or related roles within the natural resources sector. Experience working with government regulators and NGOs in Uganda is highly valued.

Salary

Glencore Uganda offers a competitive salary range of SSP 2,500,000 to SSP 4,000,000 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications. The compensation package includes performance‑based bonuses and allowances aligned with Uganda Jobs market standards.
