Job Overview

The Sustainability Compliance Officer will lead the development, implementation, and monitoring of Tororo Cement’s environmental compliance framework. Reporting to the Head of Sustainability, the officer will ensure that all operational activities adhere to national regulations, international standards, and the company’s internal sustainability policies. This position plays a critical role in safeguarding the company’s reputation, minimizing environmental risks, and supporting the broader goal of sustainable industrial growth in Uganda. The role involves close collaboration with production, engineering, legal, and community relations teams to embed compliance into daily processes. Candidates will be at the forefront of driving continuous improvement, conducting audits, and preparing comprehensive reports that inform senior management and external stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop, update, and enforce environmental compliance policies in line with Ugandan legislation and international standards such as ISO 14001.
• Conduct regular site audits, inspections, and risk assessments to identify potential non‑compliance issues.
• Prepare and submit mandatory environmental reports to the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) and other regulatory bodies.
• Collaborate with production and engineering teams to implement corrective actions and preventive measures.
• Monitor emissions, waste streams, water usage, and energy consumption, providing data‑driven recommendations for improvement.
• Lead internal training programs on sustainability practices and regulatory requirements.
• Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of evolving environmental regulations and industry best practices.
• Support the preparation of sustainability disclosures for investors, partners, and the public.
• Engage with local communities and NGOs to address environmental concerns and promote transparent communication.
• Assist in the development of corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives that align with environmental goals.

Required Skills

• Strong understanding of environmental legislation in Uganda and international compliance frameworks.
• Proficiency in environmental management systems (EMS) and audit methodologies.
• Excellent analytical and problem‑solving abilities, with a data‑oriented mindset.
• Effective communication skills for reporting to senior management and external regulators.
• Ability to work cross‑functionally and influence stakeholders at all levels.
• Project management experience, including planning, execution, and monitoring.
• Proficiency in MS Office Suite and environmental monitoring software.
• Fluency in English; knowledge of local languages is an advantage.

Education

A Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline is required. Professional certifications such as Certified Environmental Auditor (CEA) or ISO 14001 Lead Auditor are highly desirable and will be considered an asset during the selection process.

Experience

Applicants must have a minimum of five years of hands‑on experience in sustainability compliance, environmental auditing, or related roles within the manufacturing, construction, or heavy‑industry sectors. Experience working with Ugandan regulatory agencies and familiarity with the cement or construction materials industry will be advantageous.

Salary
